The Good Bits

Short pieces about the work that does not make a press release — and the occasional thing that went wrong.

Recent pieces

The 26 kilometres we did not save

The first alignment for the Coastal Export Pipeline was shorter and cheaper. It clipped the corner of a gazelle range, so we moved it — rerouting cost less than the mitigation would have.

Cleaning solar panels without water

Dust is the enemy of a solar array in Al Wusta. Waterless robots run a nightly cycle across 46 MW of panels, which is the only reason the arrays hold 99% availability.

Turtles set the marine schedule

Nesting season on the beach next to Ras Sahil is a fixed constraint in the construction programme, written in on the first day of planning rather than accommodated later.

The number we got wrong

Our 2020 flaring figure was an addition of estimates and it was too low. Metering every tip restated the baseline upwards, which made our subsequent reductions look smaller. We published the restatement anyway.

Ninety graduates, seventy-one local

The 2025 intake was the largest to date. Every one of them spends a full rotation on an operating site, because that is where a design decision stops being abstract.

A shutdown that finished early

Marran's second shutdown was scheduled for 45 days and closed in 41. Everything that could be prefabricated had been, so the critical path was lifting rather than welding.
